Class Task #7 – Layer Masks…Like Face Masks
Image 1 with Layer Mask Shifted
![]()
Question & Answer
1.What happens when you paint part of the layer mask…black? …white? …grey?
When you paint the part of the layer mask black, you can’t see the image anymore. Its opacity is 0%. When you paint the part of the layer mask white, the top image comes back and the opacity is 100%. When you paint the vector mask grey, the image is partially translucent. This means you can see both the top and bottom image, but it’s opacity is half and half, therefore you can partially see both images.
Task #6- Photo Editing Challenge
Problem #1
Before After
Solution #1
I cut out the eye with the magnetic lasso. I made sure that I cut far from the eye, so I can a lot of the detail surounding the eye to be identical on the other side for the final product. Next, I got that part of the image, flipped it and rotated the eye. I made sure that it was on the same level as the other eye.

Problem #2
Before After
Solution #2
I copied a large part of the girl’s face, since I noticed that her face is symmetrical. I flipped it over and made sure it was in the correct postion. I used the smudge tool to make sure you wouldn’t see the copy mark on the face. I copied a part of the side of the newspaper to cover the ripped part. I made sure that I used a part where it had no major wrinkles to avoid the paper to look “photoshopped”. Also, I paid close attention to the colour of the paper to make sure all the levels looked even.
Class Task #5- Born into Brothels
1) How did you enjoy the film? What stood out for you?
I enjoyed the film because it gave me an insight about how the children live in a
world where the parents aren’t there to help them. But instead, they do prostitution, sell illegal alcohol, and do drugs. The children are forced to live with them. Half of them who are still young, have no clue about what happens in their small society. What stood out for me was Zana, who came out to Calcutta’s Red Light District. She had made the biggest, most postive influence for these children. She was the only parent-figure toward these children because she gave them love, trust, honesty, and hope. She taught them how to express themselves by photographs. She took the time to teach them about what a camera was, since none of the children had never seen one in their life. Then from there on, she told them to take pictures about how their life was like being in the brothels. What stood out from this journey of the children and this woman, was the outcome of the photos. These children, who have never used a camera before in their life, were able to tell us just by photos of how there life was like by the images. It gave us an insight of what kind of photographer each child was based on the photos they took. Overall, the photos were amazing.
2) Did you learn anything new about photography, life, people? What?
I learned a lot about about photography, life, and people. During this film, I was able to learn from the children and the woman was that the pictures you take aren’t right or wrong. Photography is another way to express yourself using images. I also learned new vocabulary in this film. They talked about words to explain what type of photo was taken.
On the other hand, for life, I learned that we take things for our advantage in the part of the world we live in. We are able to live in a good environment, with security, free education, etc. People, especially children who live in dangerous socities, and poor areas don’t have much to rely on. Most of the time, the only guidance they have is their parents who they themselves aren’t good role models for these kids. A good example was shown in this film.
3) How do you think the world needs to change? How important is this?
The world needs to change because many woman and children in poor areas are being used and abused, and no one says anything about it. Every person has a right to be free and not be controlled by another human being. This is important that everyone gets informed about it is because, if people don’t know about what’s happening to these people, we will never have a chance to help them in this lifetime. It’s our duty as a human being to help others. If everyone helped atleast one person who was living a troubled life, the world would be a better place.
4) What are you willing to do TODAY to be a part of that change?
What I’m willing to do TODAY to be a part of that change is trying to make a difference in helping others. I could be like a spokesperson for my school to let them informerd about what’s happening to people around the world affected by prostitution.
5) Do you know a good song/rap/poem with good lyrics about change in the world? Post a link or lyrics to share it with us.
Runaway Love lyrics
(feat. Mary J. Blige)
[Hook - Mary J. Blige]
Runaway love
Runaway love
Runaway love
Runaway love
Runaway love
Runaway love
Runaway love
Runaway love
[Verse 1 - Ludacris]
Now little Lisa is only 9 years old
She’s trying to figure out why the world is so cold
Why she’s all all alone and they never met her family
Mama’s always gone and she never met her daddy
Part of her is missing and nobody will listen
Mama is on drugs getting high up in the kitchen
Bringing home men at different hours of the night
Starting with some laughs — usually ending in a fight
Sneak into her room while her mama’s knocked out
Trying to have his way and little Lisa says ‘ouch’
She tries to resist but then all he does is beat her
Tries to tell her mom but her mama don’t believe her
Lisa is stuck up in the world on her own
Forced to think that hell is a place called home
Nothing else to do but get her clothes and pack
She says she’s ’bout to run away and never come back.
[Hook - Mary J. Blige]
Runaway love [x8]
[Verse 2 - Ludacris]
Little Nicole is only 10 years old
She’s steady trying to figure why the world is so cold
Why she’s not pretty and nobody seems to like her
Alcoholic step-dad always wanna strike her
Yells and abuses, leaves her with some bruises
Teachers ask questions she making up excuses
Bleeding on the inside, crying on the out
It’s only one girl really knows what she about
Her name is lil Stacy and they become friends
Promise that they always be tight ’til the end
Until one day lil Stacy gets shot
A drive by bullet went stray up on her block
Now Nicole stuck up in the world on her own
Forced to think that hell is a place called home
Nothing else to do but get some clothes and pack
She says she’s ’bout to run away and never come back.
[Hook - Mary J. Blige]
Runaway love [x8]
[Verse 3 - Ludacris]
Little Erica is eleven years old
She’s steady trying to figure why the world is so cold
So she pops x to get rid of all the pain
‘Cause she’s having sex with a boy who’s sixteen
Emotions run deep and she thinks she’s in love
So there’s no protection he’s using no glove
Never thinking ’bout the consequences of her actions
Living for today and not tomorrow’s satisfaction
The days go by and her belly gets big
The father bails out he ain’t ready for a kid
Knowing her mama will blow it all outta proportion
Plus she lives poor so no money for abortion
Erica is stuck up in the world on her own
Forced to think that hell is a place called home
Nothing else to do but get her clothes and pack
She say she’s about to run away and never come back.
[Hook - Mary J. Blige]
Runaway love [repeats 'til end]
6) Pick a non-profit organization that is important to you. Why is this important to you? Do they have a website?
A non-profit organization that’s important to me is the Children’s Wish Foundation. It’s important to me because it been able to fulfill some of the most complex wishes imaginable. Granting wishes to children with high-risk life-threatening illnesses helps them give hope during a rough time in their life. If their wish is granted, they will be happy to see that even though they might feel well, their wish came true.
Here’s the website: http://www.childrenswish.ca/index_2007.php/en/welcome
7) What ideas do you have for media arts projects that we could do individually or as a class to help contribute to these organizations that are important to us?
Some ideas I have for media arts projects that we could do individually or as a class to help contribute these organization that are important to us are:
-> make get well soon cards for kids who are very ill
->make posters advertising these organizations to let people know about them, so
they can help out these organizations
->make our own piece of art (can be anything) and give it the children of the less
fortunate
->make them cards (if its their birthday, then we can design a birthday card)

Class Task #4- Understanding Resolution
Question & Answer
1) Will a 300 dpi image or a 72 dpi image be clearer when printed out at the same size? How come?
Yes, a 300 dpi image will be clearer when printed out at the same size because you will be able to see the detals in the picture. If you were to print out a 72 dpi image, it’s going to really small and you’re not going to see a lot of the detail that’s in the picture. The picture is going to end up being blurry. If I streched the 72 dpi picture to be the same size as the 300 dpi picture, the image will become too blurry to see. You will end up seeing the hundreds of pixels from the image you just stretched.
2) What would a picture created at 1 dpi look like?
A picture created at 1 dpi will look very small. You won’t be able to see any of the detail
in the picture because it’s not big enough to see anything.

Questions and Answers
1.What combination of tools did you use to isolate the fruit in “fruit_combo.jpg” and where in the image did you use which tool?
The combination of tools I used to isolate the fruit in fruit_combo. jpg was the magnetic lasso and the eraser. I used the magnetic lasso to go over my image and then delete the background. Afterwords, if there were any small details left around the bowl, I used the eraser tool to erase the uneven edges.
2. Of the methods you used to isolate the fruit in the 3 pictures. Which method did you find most effective in this case?
Out of all the methods I used, the method I found most effective in this case was the magnetic lasso tool. I found it useful because I was able to do a better job of isolating the fruit bowl faster.
3. Experiment with the following:
After you make a selection in the menu and go to
a) Select > Modify > Expand
For this selection , the fruit bowl image becomes bigger or smaller based on the
pixel size.
b) Select > Modify > Contract
For this selection, the fruit bowl image becomes smaller or bigger based on the
pixel size.
c) Select > Feather
For this selection, the fruit bowl image becomes smoother and gives off
a white glow. Therefore, the image can hide hard edges and blends everything
together.
What do these do? Post a fourth image indicating that you know what feathering does.
